Who we are
I’m Fernando, a lifelong resident of Maywood, IL. I’m a proud Proviso Math and Science Academy alum (‘22) and currently attend The University of Chicago, pursuing a B.A. in Economics and History.
Growing up, I developed a deep appreciation for my schooling and the opportunities it provided me. In the classroom, I was transported to the ancient civilizations of Rome and Egypt, the tiny organelles of human cells, and the galaxies across the universe. I explored topics ranging from the existential threats presented by superbugs, the works of Kant, global social movements of the 20th century, and the models of modern economics. These topics affirmed my commitment to a lifetime of learning, whether in formal schooling, in the books, or through YouTube videos. I pursued a college education to further explore these topics while preparing myself to pursue a professional career.
For young adults, especially from underserved backgrounds, college will be a transformative experience. It provides invaluable opportunities to connect with like-minded peers, pursue a wide range of careers, and foster a rapid period of personal growth. It will broaden perspectives, challenge them in ways they can’t predict, and better prepare them to become lifelong learners.
I recognize the ever-increasing costs of a college education and its financial burden on low to middle income families. This scholarship program is my attempt to reduce such strain for our Proviso scholars.
In my free time, I enjoy playing tennis, reading history books, learning about astronomy, watching soccer, and traveling.
